Olney Manor Dog Park will close for about a month for the installation of lighting.
Montgomery Parks spokesman Melissa Chotiner said the project is supposed to begin later this month, possibly Dec. 23.
The dog park will need to be closed during the construction period. Work is expected to be completed by end of January, weather permitting.
Parking will also be restricted due to the installation of a staging area, located in the lower section of the parking lot adjacent to the dog park.
Funding for the project will come from a $100,000 state bond bill received three years ago for facility enhancements.
Some improvements were made, including the installation of drinking fountains and shade shelters, and enhancements to make the facility Americans with Disability Act (ADA) compliant.
Because money was left over, officials determined that lighting the dog park would be the best use of the funds because the recreation fields and tennis courts are already lit, and park staff is on-site in the evenings.
The light fixtures will match the existing street lights on the adjacent driveway and parking lots. They are full cut-off fixtures, which will direct light down and into the dog park, preventing light from infringing onto adjacent properties.
The lights at the dog park will be on a timer, automatically shutting off at 11 p.m. The time is consistent with the rest of the lights throughout the park and Montgomery Parks’ policy for lighted facilities.
During construction, park users may visit other dog parks in the county, including Black Hill Regional Park, Cabin John Regional Park, Ellsworth Urban Dog Park, Ridge Road Recreation Park and Wheaton Regional Park.
