The JOY Supernovas, the elite team of Montgomery County Special Olympics Cheerleading, took the gold as part of the U.S. National Team at the International Cheer Union World Cheerleading Championships.
The event was held April 23-27 in Orlando.
Cheerleaders with and without disabilities from around the world competed in the prestigious event held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
“The cheerleaders were so excited and were so pleased with themselves, as they should have been,” Marci Ruderman, parent and team manager for the JOY Supernovas, said. “They have never been in that kind of arena before. They gave it everything”
Ruderman said the new world champions “even get rings” with their title. “And when it was over, they went to Disney World.”
The team will now focus on the Special Olympics cheer season, leading up to the state competition next month, Ruderman said.
