Thousands of visitors turned out for Olney’s 29th National Night Out on Aug. 6, celebrating the community’s relationship with its first responders.
“National Night Out was another tremendous success,” said Terri Hogan, executive director of the Olney Chamber of Commerce, which coordinates and hosts the event each year along with business and nonprofit sponsors.
An official crowd estimate was not available at press time.
“This event brings our community together in a way that truly reflects the spirit of Olney,” Hogan said. “It is a result of the hard work and dedication of so many people – the Chamber of Commerce, the first responders, our planning committee, volunteers, local businesses and residents. Together, we showcase what makes Olney a truly special place to live and work.”
Elected officials and public safety leaders started their visits to the numerous National Night Out events around the county by taking part in Olney’s opening cavalcade, presentation of the Colors by members of the American Legion and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and welcoming the crowd.
“The praise for Olney from the many elected officials and VIPs made me very proud of my community,” Hogan said. “And the sight of a stage full of children dancing to the ‘Macarena’ and ‘Cotton-Eyed Joe’ was a truly heartwarming way to end the night.”
Net proceeds from the event will be donated to the Montgomery County Police Department’s Officer Noah Leotta Olney Police Satellite Station, Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department, Maryland-National Capital Park Police and the Officer Noah Leotta “Act Responsibly” Scholarship.
